Maritime Museum/Rotterdam
As we arrived in Rotterdam, it became apparent to me what Liz meant when she said the architecture was different; the buildings were tall, glass buildings that seems familiar to a city like Chicago. The Maritime Museum was not what I was expecting, at all. I was very impressed with the model they made of Rotterdam; however the new exhibit in the museum, 'Sex and the Sea' gave us an overwhelming idea of what sex and entertainment was like at the sea. Overall, it was a great concept of adding to the museum but I think the tour guide could have used our time a little better than he did. It was nice to see the large difference between Rotterdam and the rest of the Netherlands!

I wasn't expecting that sort of architecture so that was a bit of a surprise for me. I was expecting old buildings like we see every day here in Amsterdam. Very cool though.
ReplyDeleteIt was nice to see the new, more modern buildings in Rotterdam , it reminded me a bit of what Dresden looked like.
ReplyDeleteThat is interesting how two cities in Europe have been modernized after the destruction of World War II. However, Dresden's destruction was much greater due to the Firebombing. Rotterdam had a quicker rebuild due to the importance of the port and the economic backing that it provided the city. The modern buildings of the city have been built in recent times due to the port and the fact that it is the economic engine of the city and the country.
DeleteI was not sure what we were even watching when we came to the "Sex and the sea" exhibit. I thought it was going to be people talking about their experience at sea. I also felt like the tour guide was a little too interested in that exhibit. . .
ReplyDeleteI totally agree it was not what I expected at all. The model was very interesting, but the new exhibit was well interesting to say the least. I thought the architecture was pretty amazing! The block homes were cool!
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed the Rotterdam model at the museum, we were able to see the city from a birds eye view which was interesting.
ReplyDeleteThe exhibit about the port and how the port expanded was pretty interesting and to be able to see it after we were done at the museum was equally as interesting. I did feel that the "sex and the sea" exhibit is being used to attract more visitors to the museum and was a little raunchier than I expected.
ReplyDeleteThe explanation of how Roterdam grew to be the port that it is was interesting. I had not thought about how marine technology, economic growth, international trade, geography, ecology, political climate n and more where so tightly interwoven in how they can shape a city.
