Franeker Planetarium

The planetarium was amazing to see, it may not have looked like much because not much is really moving at a pace that is noticeable in the few minutes we were looking at it.  All of the specialized clockwork that was put in place in order to keep the planets in their proper positions, the date and time, even way time the sun is going to rise and set along with lunar and solar eclipse predictions was just astounding.  The fact that it was built in the 18th century and is still working today while being accurate is even more amazing.

  1. The fact that this guy made this entire planetarium in his free time was truly just amazing, especially since it still works today, I mean there are not many contraptions like this that can last for 300+ years and still work, and to know that it was basically one man doing this, it truly is quite amazing.

  2. I was curious as to what his family thought. He kinda took over the house and it must have been a mess while he was working on it.

  3. It's amazing how he didn't give up on the planetarium given how many gears and systems he had to put together with his own hands; and the fact that he accomplished his goal successfully.

  4. I agree it is amazing that all of his model still works even though it was built such a long time ago and predicting when the sun will set and rise is also pretty cool. I agree with Alex though it would have been cool to see what his family thought about this and how much space it would have taken up in his house when he was building it.
